The narrator’s wife almost likes everything of American life, but he reduces everything to only three features. Firstly he talks about the garbage disposal. In his eyes the disposal is wonderful, because it makes his job, it’s funny to handle and by the way very dangerous (but this danger he sorely loves) He describes the best sounds of wrecking things e.g. Coffee grounds or cantaloupe rinds, that make the throatiest sound of all. For him a garbage disposal is meanwhile absolutely essential. Then he narrates about the fireplace ashpit, which is fulfilling two. He says that the ashpit is a hole where you can shuffle the “rest of the fire” in and you have nothing else to do. Then the dirt debarks in the basement. This is the last vital feature he talks about. For him basements are useless and spaciously and he likes it. All enclose clotheslines, a trickle of water, camping gear and a lot of other things no one needs. Exceptional accurate he describes that basements are useless. Everybody goes down there and says: “We have to something with this space”. But no one does, but for him basements are a great invention. At last he goes back to his garbage disposal to destroy a juice carton.
